Mass Effect 2

Title: Mass Effect 2
Media: Video Game (Xbox 360 version)
Rating: Four Spaceships

Mission Notes: At time of writing, I'm replaying this game for the second time, so review is probably going to be affected by that.

Mission Briefing:
Okay, this was like a movie trilogy in this case. The first and third games were great, but not so much the second game.
First, let's start with some of my complaints.
There are story problems in this one... two main ones. The first is the beginning and the whole "coming-back-from-the-dead" thing. It bugs me and my Christian beliefs. The second story problem is the disturbing ending, which is just plain disturbing. UGH!!!
Also, there's they freakin' change a bunch of things! ARGH!!!
And then there's this sudden switch to ammo. Yes, yes, they call it thermal clips to prevent overheating, but IT'S STILL AMMO! I so liked not worrying about ammo! ARGH...!
Oh, and there are a few other story probs and things I don't care about.
But this game is still good, and I still enjoyed it. You even get used to the thermal clips after a while, and most of the controls.
The story was still good. Your decisions from the last game affect this one, even in minor ways. It's pretty cool, especially when one just pops up in your face.
Oh, and you still get to play with Garrus and Tali'Zorah! I was super-excited when I got Garrus back, and was really giddy when I got Tali back! You still manage to see many of the game characters from the last game, but these two are the ones actually pickable as your team (though you only get Tali later).
Also, not everything about the new characters are bad. My fave from the new characters is Mordin Solis (sp?), the salarian doctor. He's just funny, and can make me laugh, in mid-fight.
Also, pure awesome here, YOU CAN RECRUIT A GETH!!!
AWESOME!!!
Also, you don't have to worry about piloting a MAKO! ( : ) )
Oh, and shopping becomes more fun. You get your own personal cabin, and can buy pets, including fishies! Problem and annoying thing about the fishies is that you have to feed them after every time you return from a mission or they die! ARGH!!!
Also, you get to personalize your character's armor. You can buy armor pieces, and even play with their color! It was COOL!
Also, you can now take Paragon or Renegade actions. A symbol of either one appears on the screen, then you can hit the right trigger button to do it. Or you can wait it out, and not do the action. Thing is, I didn't know that at first, and just did everything. Again, did things that I probably wouldn't have done due to that. ARGH!!! Also, there's at least one time where you don't see the symbol clearly. This caused me to miss it the first time I played it, but I found it on the second play-through.
Also, they fixed a problem from the first game. After I was done with the main storyline of the game, I was able to go back and play some more! And I was not chunked into the last boss fight! Timeline-wise, I was simply sent to right before the initiation of the end-mission. YES! Good move, people! Also, I was able to do stuff that was still transferred to the last game! YES!
All in all, this still was a good game.

Mass Effect: Ascension

Title: Mass Effect: Ascension
Media: Book
Author: Drew Karpyshyn
Rating: Four Spaceships

Mission Note: This book comes in-between Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2.

Mission Briefing:
Okay... first, I have to tell you something. If you read my book review blog before, you might know this already. But I have this thing about reading books in the same series in a row. As I read more, I get less excited, and the books seem less good, even when it's probably really good!
That's what most likely happened with this one. I read it right after Mass Effect: Revelation. So it seemed not as good as its counterpart.
HOWEVER, as you can plainly see up above, it still got a 4-Spaceship rating. So this book was still good! I still say get it!
So, all in all, it's a good book, but didn't seem as good as Mass Effect: Revelation.

Wow... lame review!!! Even for some of my lame reviews!!!

Mass Effect: Paragon Lost

Title: Mass Effect: Paragon Lost
Media: Movie
Rating: Four and a Half Spaceships

Mission Briefing:
James Vega and his team manages to save a reasearch colony on Fehl (sp?) Prime from the Blood Pack. But then the team is assigned guard duty. 2 years pass without trouble...
And then some mysterious bug-like aliens attack!!!
Along with some new dude and the asari researcher Treeya, who James is crushing on, James has to save the colony again, and defeat the aliens. But will he be successful? Will he live up to be like his hero, Commander Shepard?
What will happen?

Mission Report:
This movie was surprisingly good!
Thing is, there were a few issues. Some was lore-wise. I've heard that there were complaints on sizes of the Collectors. Okay, maybe for the hunter. But when I was playing Mass Effect 2, I was too busy blasting Collectors to really notice the size!
But the Alliance gaining data on the Collectors and Reapers? Shouldn't the Alliance (and the Council) have done something due to that in the games or books? Okay, admittedly, the fourth M.E. book wasn't good, especially lore-wise, but there was no backing in the third book. I felt like that was a lore glitch, and I'm not appreciative of those. There were a few other glitches as well.
Also, it was a lot gorier than I was expecting. Yeah, yeah, it was Mass Effect, so gore was supposed to jump in. It was still gorier than I expected, or really cared for. Okay, most was blood effects.
My other biggest sure complaint is how the krogans were drawn. It was horrible!!! I was still able to tell that they were krogan, but they looked like a different, new species! AW MAN, PEOPLE!!!
Otherwise, the art was excellent. The rest of the aliens were done extremely well... and not just humans! Most of the Collectors were great (except the hunter... after they had shown the marine and the effect once, they didn't have to keep repeating. It was annoying, and I kept being drawn to her whenever she was on screen as part of the hunter. YEESH!). Also, the asari, varren, and vocha were all excellent! You could tell what those were!
Admittedly, the CGI was a little weak. But it was still cool, especially when we got to see the old MAKO tank. I may really don't like driving that thing, but seeing it on-screen and as part of this movie was really cool.
Also, seeing all those elements I knew from the games was cool. I recognized the Collector ship. Plus seeing how the pods worked on picking up their victims and opening up was cool.
Also, I saw familiar characters! We saw Liara T'Soni, David Anderson, and even Admiral Hackett! Of course, James Vega, who is a team member in Mass Effect 3, was the main character. I was glad to have the opportunity to learn more about James Vega. I feel like M.E.3 just dropped the character on me... but I'll probably cover that in more detail when I review Mass Effect 3.
The movie was pretty enjoyable. Good action, mostly-good art (it was an anime), and high levels of enjoyment, despite the not-enjoyable parts...
All in all, this was a good movie. Nice job, guys!

Mass Effect: Revelation

Title: Mass Effect: Revelation
Media: Book
Author: Drew Karpyshyn
Rating: Five Spaceships

Mission Notes:
To folks who haven't played Mass Effect: this story takes place before Mass Effect.
To players of Mass Effect: Remember how David Anderson and Saren have a history? This book plays out that story. If you didn't know that David Anderson and Saren had a history, sorry for the spoiler alert.

Mission Report:
Oh man, this book was extremely well-done!
Hats off to the author, this was a good book! The writing was superb! Five-star material, all the way!
In fact, the only reason this book lost points was due to how well-written it was. There were some very disturbing and freaky parts... particulilary (sp?), some of Saren's scenes. But it was due to how well-written the book was! I believe you were meant to be disturbed and freaked out, and it did an excellent job with that! The characters almost felt real!
This book was pure excellent, and the writing was superb! Well done, Drew Karpyshyn!!!

Star Trek: Into Darkness

Title: Star Trek: Into Darkness
Media: Movie
Rating: Five Spaceships

Mission Report:
Oh man!
This movie was just so good!
The story was good, and the acting was excellent. Especially the guy who played Khan... he freaked me out at times with his good acting.
Also, the writing of the story wasn't bad. They did use an obvious play at the end, but it tipped off towards good writing that the mini-bits which made the ending obvious actually were used. Still, it was annoying.
But, otherwise, the movie was really good! I can say that happily, and I'm admittedly not a Trekkie! Good job, guys!!!

Elysium

Title: Elysium
Media: Movie
Rating: Five Spaceships

WARNING: THIS MOVIE IS RATED "R"!!!

Mission Report:
But this movie was pure awesome. The action was good, and it was pretty enjoyable. It was pretty gory, though... more than I had expected.
However, it was a very good movie. And the ending... icing on the cake! It was awesome! Well-done and awesome! Despite the sadder tone, the way the ending was written and done... awesome! Good job, writers!
This is a movie I definitely suggest! It's awesome!
